Emo style: A different way of life!

You see the word “Emo” and think maybe there is a type-o, but there isn’t. I have never heard of Emo style, but I recognize some pictures and of course the hairstyle. There are many different fashion styles that you cannot keep up with them. Emo style is one of them, so let’s find out what it is, how it began, and if it exists today.

Emo ”, (pronunciation, i: mou) style started out as a style of rock music by the American punk rock bands, but now it is tied into fashion and a whole different culture. Emo style began in the 80s as hard punk music. It was said to have started due to the violence that was going on in the world at that time. It originated in Washington, and by the early 90s, it started to blend in with Pop and Indie. By the mid to late 90s, top record labels began to pick up the music and brand their label on it. With Emo style music, it is the hardcore punk rock music that is played faster, much louder and heavier, and also reinvented itself during the grunge era.

In the 20th century, Emo style began to evolve into what they called “screaming” or “screamo”. In the urban lifestyle, Emo style is used to describe the type of fashion or behavior that someone shows. For some teenagers and young adults, it has become a culture or way of life. Emo style is a way for deeply disturbed Emotional individuals to get rid of their Emotions or turmoil during a concert by screaming or weeping. The style started at a concert when someone shouted it toward a band as an insult. Emo style music is sad music, usually about women that have broken the guys’ heart, and the music is written by the guy as a way of bragging or boasting about how hurt he is, or as it were, how devastated he is by the breakup and how he is being treated.

Today, the Emo style ties fashion and music together. It is usually fashion and music that teens tend to gravitate towards. It has become a way of stereotyping someone who is different from everyone else because they dress or act in that culture. If you are in to Emo style, you are called Emo girl or Emo boy, wearing tight skinny or straight jeans, tight shirts, black belts or wrist cuffs with studs or spikes on them, lots of piercings usually in the eyebrow or around the mouth area. Both males and females tend to wear dark eye makeup and black nail polish. Along with the clothes there is particular hairstyle worn by both sexes. Please do not confuse Emo style with what is called Goth. Individuals who express themselves as Goth only wear black. With the Emo style fashion, bright colored shirts are worn.

The hair is usually dyed black and straightened with long bangs that sweep across one eye. Sometimes the hair has highlights of bright color dyes like orange, red, blue or even a streak of blond. Other areas of the hair are usually cut shorter or even spiked.

In later years, an individual is stereotyped if they dress in Emo style. They are said to have Emotional problems, are into trouble with the law a lot, they are shy and depressed or may even commit suicide. Yes, there may be some individuals who fit the Emo style stereotype, but many of them like that style or gravitate toward this style because they are still trying to find themselves and they are trying this culture out because this is where they feel they belong.
